On Sunday July 18, the Doncaster Baseball club hosted the first North-East Junior Girls Baseball Series session at Deep Creek Reserve, and it proved a tremendous success.
For two hours on a beautful Melbourne winter day, 16 girls aged 8-13 from all over north-east Melbourne trained under the guidance of some highly qualified and experienced coaches.
The program was coordinated by current Doncaster BC member Amy McCann, a current Australian and Victorian team member and and Level 2 Coach.
Assisting her during the session was fellow Australian team member Sinead Flanigan and current Doncaster senior womens players Erin Collis, Georgia Page, Lana Holien and Beth Doherty.
The girls took part in baseball specific warm up drills, and were then guided through skills stations which worked on individual techniques such as catching, hitting, running and fielding, plus throwing. And with a speed gun testing the girls arms, there was much competition throughout each group!
The day concluded with a yardball game which allowed all girls to put the newly learned skills to test.
And at the end, all participants and parents received a free sausage sizzle, mini muffin (Courtesy of Greensborough Muffin Break) and drink! Special thanks to John & Sandy Cliff and Rob and Julie Mitchell for organising the BBQ!
"I was extremely happy with the great turn out today," said McCann after the session, adding, "The girls' enthusiasm really blew me away and they just didn't want to go home at the end."
"Although this was the first session in this region, it definately won't be the last," she added.
The sessions will resume in late September, after McCann returns from the 2010 IBAF Womens World Cup of Baseball being held in Venezuela.
Missed out on this session? Don't stress!
